What are the differences between PET sheets and other materials used for blister packaging?
1. Compared with PVC sheets:
1) Material characteristics:
PET sheets are hard, tough, strong, bright, non-flammable, environmentally friendly and food grade, and available in transparent and multi-color sheets; PVC sheets are soft, tough, and plastic, and can be made into transparent and various colors. They are the most commonly used blister packaging materials.
The transparency and scratch resistance of PET sheets are much better than PVC. PVC is blue, while PET sheets have excellent transparency and finish, and the display effect is better.
2) Usage properties:
In terms of environmental protection, PET is more environmentally friendly than PVC. PVC contains halogens and produces toxic hydrogen chloride gas when burned. For example, Coke bottles are blow-molded from PET, and food is more inclined to use PET materials.
The hot melting point is different. PET has a higher hot melting point, which brings greater difficulties to high-frequency packaging. To solve this problem, people compound a layer of PVC film on the surface of PET to form PETG, but the price is higher.
2. Compared with PS sheet:
1. Material characteristics:
PET sheet has good toughness, high strength and high transparency; PS sheet has low density, poor toughness, easy to burn, and produces styrene gas (a harmful gas) when burning.
2. Application scope:
PET sheet is suitable for high-end blister products. For example, blister shells in European and American countries generally require the use of PET materials, which can be recycled and reused, and are environmentally friendly materials, gradually replacing PVC; PS sheet is generally used to produce various industrial blister trays. In recent years, it has also been widely used in packaging in the pharmaceutical, food, toy, electronics and other industries due to its thermoforming performance and good environmental performance, but it is relatively less used in high-end blister products.
Compared with PP sheet:
1. Material characteristics: PET sheet has high strength, good transparency and bright surface; PP sheet is non-toxic, odorless, hygienic, high mechanical strength and good barrier properties, but insufficient rigidity, poor weather resistance, easy to produce “copper damage”, has post-shrinkage phenomenon, and is easy to age, become brittle and deform after demolding.
2. Application fields: PET sheets are widely used in electronics, food, toys, color box windows, collar trays, shoe packaging, etc.; PP sheets are mainly used for food packaging, such as disposable lunch boxes, fruit and vegetable trays, moon cake trays, food trays, etc., and are also suitable for packaging of highly cold-resistant frozen foods, such as ice cream boxes, dumpling boxes, and glutinous rice balls boxes.
Compared with PE sheets:
1. Material characteristics: The mechanical strength of PET sheets is better than that of PE sheets, and its expansion degree is similar to that of aluminum, and the film strength is 9 times that of polyethylene (PE). The transparency of PET sheets is also relatively good, and it has good air tightness and moisture-proof and fragrance-preserving properties; PE sheets have better transparency, softness, large elongation, better impact resistance and low temperature resistance, but as a food packaging material, its shortcomings are more obvious, such as poor gas barrier properties.
2. Application scenarios: PET sheets are often used for products with high packaging requirements, such as blister packaging of electronics, high-end cosmetics, and food, due to their excellent comprehensive performance; PE sheets are often used for products with relatively low packaging requirements, such as packaging of some simple daily necessities and industrial products.
In general, the advantages of PET sheets in blister applications include excellent transparency and finish, good mechanical strength, good barrier properties to oxygen and water vapor, good chemical resistance, non-toxic and hygienic, recyclable and reusable, and compliance with environmental protection requirements. These advantages make it widely used in blister packaging in many fields, especially for high requirements on packaging quality and environmental protection performance. However, at the same time, the price of PET sheets is relatively high, and the high melting point makes the processing relatively difficult. In specific applications, factors such as product demand and cost need to be considered comprehensively.
